Writing in a New Genre – A Scary Proposition

When I started writing my latest release, Extra Innings, it was as a weekly serial published on my author blog. When it began, I wanted it to be a mix of baseball nostalgia mixed with my usual crime fiction genre.

As I began fleshing out the character of Joe McLean, something became very apparent. he was a character worth exploring. He was a 40-something-year-old divorced man who was stuck in the drudgery of working in a family business. Because he was not a member of the family, he would never be promoted above the level he had achieved after more than 20 years.

old stadiumHe went through a sad divorce from a childless marriage and still pined for the woman he loved and lost. His only constant was attending baseball games and rooting for his hometown team in the WWII era stadium that was such a big part of his youth. Now, with the stadium set to be demolished and replaced with a new corporate cookie-cutter version, Joe’s depression began to set in.

As he examined that depression, he came to the realization that the stadium was only part of it. He had a dead-end job, a lonely life and had lost both of his parents to untimely, preventable events.

This was when the question arose in my mind: If you could go back and change things in your past to make your future more desirable, would you? That’s when the idea of time travel crept in and I found myself branching off into a new genre.

Now, I have to explain that the supernatural/paranormal/horror genre family is something that I enjoy reading as much as my beloved crime fiction. I’m an avid reader of Stephen King (along with both of his sons) and, to some extent, Dean Koontz. I just was afraid that, as an author, if I deviated from the genre I was known for, it might end up alienating readers.

The beauty of indie publishing combined with having a blog is that I could first test the waters through the vehicle of my weekly serial and then, if the reaction was positive, turn the serial into a full-fledged book in a new genre without securing any approval but my own.

That brings me to today and the release of Extra Innings. I used more beta readers than usual for this book, and the reaction has been positive. In addition, pre-orders were up over some of my previous books. I take that as an encouraging sign.

About Don Massenzio:

me-20160408Don was born in Syracuse, New York to first generation Italian American parents. He’s an avid reader. Some of his favorite authors are Harlan Coben, David Morrell, Stephen King, Jonathan Kellerman, John Grisham, and Hugh Howey. His favorite book of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird.

Don started writing as a way to combat the long hours of travel and numerous hotel stays that are part of the ‘glamorous’ world of corporate life. He uses writing as a therapeutic outlet to combat my homesickness.

His first published book was Frankly Speaking. It was the first in a series of books focused on the character, Frank Rozzani, a Florida private detective. The series is a throwback to the days of pulp detective novels with a tip of the hat to Jim Rockford from the 70’s television show, The Rockford Files.  He’s also released a collection of short stories called Random Tales that is available for your Kindle or in paperback.

Also, look for his non-fiction book, The Ultimate Guide For Independently Published Authors: Tips for improving quality and selling your work, now available on Amazon.com as an eBook or in paperback

He moved to Jacksonville, Florida 23 years ago where I currently live with my wife, daughter, and three dogs.

It’s Release Day!

SAMPLEWell, I’m a bit nervous today. I’m releasing my new book, Extra InningsIt’s my ninth fiction book and tenth book overall.

So, why am I nervous, you might ask?

Well, this book is a major departure from my usual crime/detective drama genre. It has elements of supernatural/paranormal devices and really isn’t at all about crime.

The beta readers were very positive about the story premise and the book overall. I hope that those of you that choose to read it, enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed dreaming it up.

You might be asking: What is it about?

Here is a blurb that sums it up:

Joe McLean hates his life. A lonely, divorced, middle-aged man, stuck in a cramped apartment, the only bright spot in Joe’s life is cheering on his hometown baseball team.

Now, the local stadium, the place of many childhood and adult memories is being replaced. Joe desperately wants a piece of this iconic venue to preserve his memories and have some memorabilia from his happier past.

This book is an ambitious endeavor. It’s my longest to date.

Cover Reveal For My Latest Release

I’m very excited about my upcoming release, Extra Innings. It is a bit of a departure for me as I’ve written mostly detective and mystery novels.

This book started as a memory from childhood of the old minor league baseball stadium in my home town. I spent many summer days there. I remember exciting games that often competed with the volatile Upstate New York weather. I even remember the field having to be plowed so there wouldn’t be snow to interrupt opening day.

The book then twists in the direction of the supernatural. The underlying theme comes from the age old conundrum, if you could go back and change anything in your life, would you?

Here is the blurb I’ve been trying out:

Joe McLean hated his life. He was middle-aged, divorce and living in a small apartment. The only bright spot in his life was cheering on his hometown baseball team. Now, the stadium that was the place of so many childhood and adult baseball memories was being replaced.

Joe desperately wants a piece of this iconic venue to preserve his memories and maybe have some memorabilia from his happier past. That’s when unusual things begin to happen, and Joe begins to rethink the direction his life has taken.

Can Joe take a different path in life? Can he use the special ability that he has acquired to change the course of his life? Will he realize the old adage, you can never go home again, is true?

Follow the twists and turns in the supernatural story, Extra Innings to find out.

I’m going to enroll this book in the Kindle Scout program soon. If you feel inclined in spreading the word once I do so, I will be reaching out. My last book, Blood Match, thanks to the help of this blogging community, was on the hot list for 22 days out of 30 during it’s Kindle Scout run. Although I didn’t receive a publishing contract from Amazon, it did give the book a boost when it was released.

Finally, here is the cover. I’d love your feedback and comments.

War of Nytefall: Loyalty – By Charles E. Yallowitz

I’m happy to turn over today’s post to Charles Yallowtiz to help him promote his newest book, War of Nytefall: Loyalty. Please enjoy learning about this new book and be sure to pick up a copy.

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

Thank you to Don Massenzio for letting me promote the first book of my newest series, War of Nytefall: Loyalty. This adventure takes place in the world of Windemere, but it focuses on a new species of vampires called Dawn Fangs. While they showed up a few times in Legends of Windemere, their origins and culture have been a mystery until now. So, where did these deadly predators come from?

In terms of the story, Windemere has had vampires since its early years, but they were the type that would lose their powers in the sun. They had a reputation for being one of the most dangerous types of undead and steadily developed a global society that mirrored the one of mortal-kind. Of course, they stayed in the shadows because this is a world of magic and those with holy power were always on the hunt. Windemere also has a rather big adventurer population and those pesky wanderers tend to show up where they’re not wanted. Even with so many enemies, the vampires flourished and became one of the top predators. Needless to say, they got rather arrogant.

Enter the Great Cataclysm, which is a mysterious event that changed the entire face of Windemere. All mortals know is that an immense power was unleashed and spread across the entire global. Continents were moved and altered with one even disappearing. Some species were wiped out and magic went haywire for the few minutes that the chaos was ensuing. It was during this time that an ambitious vampiric thief named Clyde was about to be executed by the followers of Durag the Sun God. Their spells were twisted and the entire temple city was sucked into the ground where Clyde was trapped for fifty years. On the plus side, he was trapped with plenty of snacks.

During the time he was buried, the vampires were drawn into a war with the Duragians and various hunters. After being freed by his old partner, Mab, Clyde sets off to help some of his old allies win the war. Only problem is that he came out of the ground different and is not like other vampires. He retains his strength in the sun, is much more powerful, and even has a heartbeat to help pass himself off as a mortal. Knowing that some might see him as a threat, he tries to keep this a secret, but we all know how that never works. Without going into spoilers, the war shifts from one between vampires and mortals to a civil war between the old-world vampires and the Dawn Fangs.

Outside of the story, the origin of the Dawn Fangs is fairly simple and kind of comical. I played Clyde in a tabletop game called ‘Vampire: The Masquerade’, but the group eventually moved to another game about Mages. I couldn’t get a handle on it, so I was allowed to bring Clyde back as a ‘day-walker’. Hey, ‘Blade’ was still a big thing back then and rightfully so. The tradeoff for being able to live in the daylight was that every faction wanted him either dead, enslaved, studied, or eaten. This hunted issue carried over through the various incarnations of Clyde’s series, which began with him being on Earth and eventually getting brought over to Windemere. I have to admit the Dawn Fang concept works a lot better in a fantasy setting because their appearance being caused by magic makes more sense than ‘he was just made that way’. I did try to have all vampires immune to sunlight, but then I wasn’t sure what they were fighting over since Clyde isn’t interested in ruling a kingdom or world. This battle over species dominance seemed to work out best with the old type wanting to crush the new threat and the Dawn Fangs fighting for both survival and to avenge a betrayal.

As much as I’d love to go into more details, War of Nytefall: Loyalty is all about the origin of these new top predators. While people may have noticed that they are out and about in Legends of Windemere, that didn’t happen overnight. There were a lot of decades in the shadows, which is what this series covers. Clyde and his gang have a lot of battles to survive before they can really enjoy being in the light. Although, I will say that the biggest fight might not be against an enemy that can be ripped in half. After all, the power of the Dawn Fang comes with a difficult price: Bloodlust.

Book Blurb

In the wake of the Great Cataclysm, a new predator will emerge within Windemere’s shadow.

For fifty years, Clyde has remained buried while the rest of the vampires have been battling against their enemies. Only Mab believes that her former partner survived his execution and is determined to bring him back to the city of Nyte. Retrieving the vampiric thief is only the beginning as he comes out of the ground stronger, faster, and demonstrating powers that their kind have never witnessed throughout their ancient history. Thrown into the war, Clyde must be careful to hide his true nature while fighting alongside his old friends. Too bad he is having so much fun that keeping his secret might be furthest from his mind.

Will anyone be ready for the rise of the Dawn Fangs?

The First Review Is In for Blood Match

blood match front coverWell, it’s release day. It’s been over a year since I released my last book and I’m a bit rusty. The initial review is in, however, and it seems that the book is off to a good start.

1st review

This is encouraging. The book has been finished for a while and, when I did a final edit after the beta and advance readers were done, I thought it looked okay.

If you haven’t picked up a copy, you can find it on Amazon by clicking HERE

Here is a blurb about the book:

You can check out the trailer on my YouTube channel by clicking HERE.

Intelligence analyst Jake Balrich boards his Monday morning flight, as he has so many times, for routine field work. When the plane lands, a passenger fails to wake up. Jake soon realizes that the death was not accidental and is part of a murderous plot that will have Jake running for his life as he struggles with an unknown enemy that seems to guess his every move.

Blood Match is a thriller that examines the desire for gaining power with little regard for the human lives that are affected.

Follow Jake Balrich, as he enlists the help of Commander Brad Rafferty, to take down an enemy more powerful and dangerous than the United States has ever faced.
