I’m a competitive person (some would say very competitive). I’ve always been that way and it’s not likely I’m going to change anytime soon. Mostly I’ve competed against myself. I was never a big team sports kind of guy, much preferring individual efforts like: running, hiking, cycling, golf, and tennis. It was never so much about beating other people as it was about improving my performance. The same competitive spirit dominated my professional life too (both military and civilian), and I was always trying to improve and move up in the individual rankings.
